Five days across the river: a December Test match stay

Adelaide Oval’s calendar shows the men’s Test between Australia and New Zealand from 17 to 21 December 2026. Here is how we would base a cricket week at Eos.

A Test match is a slow pleasure, and it rewards a base close enough to drift back for a swim at tea on day four. Eos is that kind of base. On the Oval’s own calendar for the 2026–27 summer, the NRMA Insurance Men’s Test between Australia and New Zealand starts on Thursday 17 December at 10am and runs, if it goes the distance, to Monday 21 December.

The walk to the ground

Adelaide Oval describes itself as 400 metres from the CBD and says Adelaide Railway Station is about five minutes away on foot across the Riverbank footbridge. The station shares the SkyCity building with Eos. SkyCity’s Game Day Entrance through the railway station tunnel is published for Adelaide Oval AFL games — open two hours before and after every game — and the venue does not say whether it opens for cricket, so for a Test plan on the Station Road and North Terrace route or ask the hotel’s concierge on arrival.

Before play

Breakfast at iTL from 7am, then a walk across the river with time to spare before the 10am start.

Lunch or tea

Westward, SkyCity’s riverbank bar facing the Oval, opens on game days and major events; check its hours against the day’s play.

After stumps

The Guardsman in the railway station lists pre- and post-game opening on game days, and The District shows sport on a big screen.

Christmas in the precinct

A Test that ends on 21 December leaves a few days before Christmas, and the precinct is already planning for it. SOL Rooftop lists a SOL Christmas Lunch, and iTL lists Christmas at iTL and a New Year’s Eve evening. We have not reprinted menus or prices, which the venues publish closer to the date, but if you want a table on Christmas Day, ask early. The Art Gallery of South Australia is closed on Christmas Day, according to its visitor page, so plan the gallery for another morning.

More cricket after the Test

The Adelaide Strikers play BBL|16 home games at the Oval on 23 December and 31 December 2026, and on 6, 12 and 16 January 2027, all in the evening except the 16 January match, which starts at 3.30pm. A New Year’s Eve game on the 31st is the obvious bookend to a cricket holiday.

Which room

This is the week for the river side. The Allure River View rooms, the Radiance River View suites and The Grace Villa are the categories the hotel describes with river views, facing across the Torrens towards the Oval. If you are coming as a group of friends, the Allure Two Bedroom or a pair of Allure Twin rooms keeps costs sensible; for a family celebration, the villa includes breakfast for four and valet for two cars.

Managing the risk of an early finish

Test matches can end inside five days. If you book five nights around the Test and it finishes on day three, you may find yourself with spare evenings — which is no hardship in Adelaide in December, but it is a reason to think about rate type. Flexible bookings can be cancelled without charge until 3pm the day before arrival; pre-paid ones cannot be changed. If you want to keep options open, book the core nights on a flexible rate.
